Linking School Activities to Student Learning Outcomes

While planning for events at several elementary schools in the North Penn School District, family engagement teams brainstormed ways to link having parents in the building with the need to share information that they could use to support their students at home.

Events such as Book Fairs, Ice Cream Socials, Spaghetti Dinners, American Ed Week and Back to School Nights have all been traditionally well attended, so the teams decided to include a curriculum component at the same time. Science workshops, study skills programs, special area "trade shows", books n bagels are just a few examples of programs coupled with events that were well attended.

Families enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about literacy goals, science curriculum, study skills tips and more. The feedback has been very positive, and parents now feel more empowered to support learning at home.
